Fujitsu’s 10th-gen LIFEBOOK range. Spot the remote work optimisations. We struggled.
Fujitsu’s PC unit has announced a new range of laptops it says are “optimized for remote work”.
That’s a claim that rather caught our eye here at The Register, seeing as laptops were conceived of as a product that enables remote work and haven’t really deviated from that since.
So we decided to dig into just what Fujitsu PC, now controlled by Lenovo, has done to these laptops to make them so well-suited to the moment.
Fujitsu says “expanding its lineup of superior mobile products” means the company will “continue to support initiatives on remote work, as part of the customers’ workstyle transformation.”
So where are the optimisations? They’re hard to find because the new machines do pretty much what every other PC manufacturer was doing to every other laptop designed before the current coronal crisis, to wit: 10th-gen Intel Core silicon, big screens, long battery life, security shutters on webcams, privacy screens, WiFi 6, Windows 10 and big, fast, SSDs.
All of which are lovely inclusions that make a lappy useful just-about-anywhere. But we couldn’t find any remote-work-specific features to speak of. Some of the new models also pack touch screens and pens, which mean they satisfy the requirements of Intel’s Project Athena spec for modern laptops that can survive for nine hours on a single battery charge. But Athena’s a pre-corona-creation too: Chipzilla announced it in early 2019 and then detailed the spec in late May 2019.
The Register is left wondering if Fujitsu might have chosen wording to suit the times, if not precisely describe its new hardware.
You can make up own mind on that score at the company’s product info page. Or we can save you the click with a quick look at the new range:
