General Motors’ Sharon Basel on how the company’s ESG reporting provides insights for its work

Sharon Basel, senior manager of sustainability at General Motors, works a lot on the company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting. “I think it’s a really important thing not to be taken lightly,” she says. “A lot of people inside of General Motors call it the encyclopedia of GM and I think how we portray what our mission is and how we’re all marching towards a vision that we have for the company becomes really evident in that reporting.”

While Basel’s work won’t be greatly impacted by the arrival of electric vehicles, she says the ESG reporting provides insights about the opportunities and the companies leadership in the transformation of the automotive industry.

“[Reporting] is a mechanism to communicate what your progress is, how you’re continuing on that path to zero emissions, for instance, and all the actions that you’re taking,” Basel says.
