MediaTek trumpets cheap gaming chipsets for strange subset of people who enjoy PUBG on their smartphone

Fabless smartphone chipmaker MediaTek today announced two new budget platforms: the Helio G25 and G35.

The “G” stands for “gaming”, with MediaTek’s latest aimed at penny-pinching fans of PUBG Mobile. Both chips tout an 12nm process octa-core configuration, with the G25 using Cortex-A53 cores clocked up to 2GHz, and an IMG PowerVR GE8320 GPU clocked at 650MHz.

The G35 boosts the core clock speed to 2.3GHz, while the GPU also sees a frequency boost to 680MHz. The more potent platform also supports FHD (2,400 x 180) displays, while the G25 tops out at HD+ (1,600 x 720).

Both chips support eMMC 5.1 storage, as well as LPDDR3 and LPDDR4X RAM, with a maximum capacity of 6GB.

MediaTek’s HyperEngine technology also features on both, providing resource management and automatically switching between LTE and Wi-Fi based on the current network conditions.

One of the first devices to pack the MediaTek Helio G35 is the Realme C11. Coming from the sister company of OPPO and OnePlus, this cheapo smartphone offers a bare-bones experience, with a 13MP dual-camera setup, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, and a 6.5-inch HD+ display. When it goes on sale in Malaysia next month, it’ll have a price tag of RM429 – or roughly £80.

Xiaomi has also jumped on the Helio bandwagon, releasing the G25-powered Redmi 9A and the G35-powered Redmi 9C. Both of these handsets will be released in Malaysia first, with a price of RM359 (£60) and RM429 (£80) respectively. ®
